MP3: The Five One x Janelle Monae - It's Obvious

. Aug 17, 2009

From Gowhere Hip Hop: "The Five One are back with a brand new RMX this Thursday called "It's Obvious". It's a very upbeat track where the colorful band get very lyrical, and do what they do best. As always they have really unique and powerful breakdowns throughtout mixing in melodic verses, hip hop, and even spoken word all in one record. "It's Obvious" talks about the obvious things that people don't see right in front of them, because they don't choose to self analyze themselves. Avoiding your problems will only make you unhappy in the long run as they'll hang over your head until they're dealt with, so it's important to take responsibility and really try to understand yourself and the situation you're in!"

So Scotland's Calvin Harris has a project that dropped today in the UK, aptly titled Ready for the Weekend. I got a chance to listen to the project, and I must say that I was duly impressed, from beginning to end. The production creates a feel-good vibe but mixed in with the lyrics, what you have is a very complex project, detailing not only the emotion of good times but also pure, raw emotion (for instance, on such songs as "Worst Day"). I encourage you to stream the project somewhere and realize that this is a must-buy project. If that does not convince you, well, check out this ridiculous video below of the first human synthesizer.

As mentioned before, the Hangover Tour made its way through the nation's capitol earlier this month. We got to chop it up with Mr. Polo Dolo, Charles Misodi Njapa, also known as 88-Keys. While he may be new as a performing artist, he is no rookie to the hip hop industry, having worked over the years with the likes of Black Star, Scarface, Kanye West, Beanie Sigel, Musiq, Pharcyde, you name it! His production is well known, and the industry's stamp of approval runs deep, spanning over a decade. In this exclusive interview with 88-Keys, we spoke with the brain behind The Death of Adam, as he discusses his sound and influences, explains the concept behind Adam's identity, elaborates on his relationship with Kanye, among many other topics. Enjoy!

Design: Water On The Go

. Aug 16, 2009

I don’t think this design is too practical, but it’s cool nevertheless. The concept here is a durable water bottle that can be refilled at specific source water fountains. These fountains would contain a system to track how much water you use; vendors would then credit your account via a redeemable points system. On the surface it seems pretty cool; although, I’m not sure why this design is even necessary considering the fact that we already have public water fountains. One could argue that this design would eliminate the waste generated through the consumption of bottled water in vending machines. I still think it would be easier to carry your own bottle and refill at public water fountains for free. Vendors would have to make a large initial investment and hope that people actually latch on so that their overhead cost actually makes sense. Another problem I have with this design is the bottle size. I consume massive amounts of water each day and the bottles seen in the pictures do not appear to be much bigger than 12 ounces of water. Depending on the pricing scheme, this could be very expensive. All in all, I still think the concept behind it is pretty dope.

This record was dope. Not only was the beat hot, but the Game and Jaz-O also laid down some crucial rapid-fire lyrics. My only complaint is that I wish the song was longer. I’m not going to get involved in all the drama surrounding Jay-Z, Jaz-O, and The Game, but this track definitely gets my stamp of approval.

Classic Video: Trends of Culture “Valley of the Skinz”

This Harlem-based trio was “all the way live”. To this day, I can still listen to their self-titled album, “Trendz”, start to finish, without any real complaints. I don’t mean to rant (which probably means that I’m going to), but hip-hop albums used to be on a whole different plane “back in the day”. There was no prescribed formula for how the album was to be organized. Of course certain rhyme styles and patterns were employed, but in terms of subject matter, they were all over the map. One of my favorite songs from this album, aside from “Valley of the Skinz”, was “Off & On”. The beat was very ninetiesque featuring heavy kickdrums and a classic “Scenario” sample. Where are they now?

MP3: Tek ft. Richie Sosa “Tic Toc”

.

Okay, so I will admit that I originally passed on this song after viewing the artwork and song title. Despite my initial hesitancy, I took and few minutes to listen to the record and was pleasantly surprised. First off, this “G-Mix” features the vocals of Tek (from Smiff-N-Wessun) and Richie Sosa over The Alchemist’s “Tick Tock” beat which was an original sample of Side Effect’s “The Loneliest Man in Town”. The original sample by Side Effect is one of my favorite old school jams. The beat is so mellow, yet the lyrics to the song are filled with so much conviction and meaning. Given my love for the original, I was slightly biased against this new version by Tek and Richie Sosa. Luckily the two managed to hold their own and produce a track that is well worth a download or at least a few spins. Apparently this track will appear on Tek’s “I Did It My Way” project which is a prelude to featured his 24K Smoke album.

KRS-One & Buckshot Guest Appearance on “The Deal”

.

I’m not really a big fan of the show “The Deal” because they usually feature a bunch of colorless artists and videos. It came as a huge surprise when I found out that Buckshot & KRS-One made an appearance to promote their new album, “Survival Skills”, which drops on September 15th. In this interview, KRS-One and Buckshot talk about the origin of their new project, artist longevity, and auto-tune. KRS-One also wraps it up with a freestyle. What do y’all think about this new project? I’m really just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. I am a fan of the collaborations between Buckshot and 9th Wonder, but I was not really feeling the KRS-One and Marley Marl project. Nevertheless, I’m still going to pick this up when it drops.

The homie Dre over at District Fresh put together a nice, simple and clean music video for Nando. for his Marvin Gaye-influenced track "Talk to Me." Soulful rhythm on this joint and doubt lyrics. Dope cut off of his amazing mixtape Super Nike Nando which you need to cop if you haven't got it yet.

REVIEW/MIXTAPE: Phil Nash - Phil of the Future Pt. 2

. Aug 15, 2009

REVIEW:
“Phil of the Future Vol. 2” is the name of the mixtape, but it's evident that Phil Nash is well aware of the legacy of classic hip hop from the early ’90s – perhaps not all too surprising given the fact that he’s DJ Jazzy Jeff’s protégé. Throughout the project, Nash provides countless bangers, true to hip hop form and impressively raw lyricism. Noticeable, as well, is the overall feel to the project, as he seamlessly transfers from song to song, all the while maintaining an incredible melodic balance of originality, precision, and vision.

His latest mixtape includes several cuts heavily influenced by the classic New York Tribe vibe. For example, “I Smell Smoke” (produced by Heartbeat the Producer) channels a soulful sample of Dionne Warwick’s “Walk on By” into a heart-wrenched testimony of struggle and inequality. “Heat Stop Working”, “Much More”, and “Gonna Want Me Back” offer a nostalgic feeling to the vintage days, a testament to the reason why NY became the Mecca of hip hop, as Detroit’s Nash flows with ease over the catchy jazzy trumpets. Equally impressive is his homage to the Queensbridge veteran Nas over the tracks “Nasty Nash” and “Nash is Like”, backed by the instantly-recognizable Premo beats. Lest we forget to recognize those who have paved the way, let’s point out the sampling of Big Daddy Kane’s “Ain’t No Half Steppin’” on Nash’s “Halfsteppin’”, a track full of sincere ambition and unbridled yet not-over-the-top egoism.

Aside from the lyrics, the production on this project is impeccable, full of classic yet classy sampling and smooth drum overlay. Easily, the most notable producer on the mixtape is the legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff who offers his services on two tracks. There are also several credible features with the VA MC Skillz, Sim City, and Phene, among others. However, don’t get it twisted: while the features are heavy and the production solid, Nash is not left in the shadows, as he commands every track with his presence and embeds each with his own unique style.

His goal is achieve mixtape of the year (and no doubt more!), and honestly the ambitious vision is not far-fetched. He is one who has much to offer and is getting only better. I have witnessed his steady progression ever since his first mixtape and several feature songs, most notably “Uptown Anthem” with Washington, DC artist “Marky” (Studio 43 / SRC / Universal Records) off the VH1 Honor Roll mixtape, which was how I first discovered him. In conclusion, with his dope flow and respect and knowledge of hip hop history, Phil Nash has a clear lane to make some heavy moves in the future. Perhaps that is why we know him as . . . Phil of the Future.

Nelly is coming back with some heat from the Pharrell. Will this connection brew up success again? I dont know, but I definitely love the trumpets on this track. His flow on this track sounds wierd tho, this is not really Nelly's style. I'm used to the St. Louis casual flow, not this flow where he is trying to articulate every word he is saying....

I been a fan of Jackie Chain ever since that "Rollin" track I heard him do with Cudder. But, for real I never what of thought he looked the way he looks when I first heard the track. Dude is a like a half-asian Paul Wall and you know what....I mess with it. Spotted this on DCtoBC and the video for this song he hella ghetto so I didn't throw it up and I had to search a hell of a lot to not find a ghetto picture either. Dude needs a lil management and he'll be perfect, and I agree with Modi he needs a haircut.

Review: Jade - It's My Heart, Cookie EP

.

Every time that I go to check out the GFC site, I always saw the image of the lovely songstress Jade, but I never took my time out to listen. I was a fool…because when I finally took the opportunity to sit back and listen, I was blown away. This girl has an amazing powerful, yet sweet voice that soothes any track.

Her EP “It’s My Heart, Cookie” is only a snippet of greatness that should come from this young singer once her album is released. Jade is an artist that knows her craft, as she graduated from the renowned La Guardia High School for Performing Arts majoring in vocals. She is determined to make it in this industry, as she even parted from Pharrell’s Star Trak label after frustration with being “a benchwarmer.”

Jade has lyrics for days and a definite message that she wants to spread to the public. “It’s My Heart, Cookie” is a perfect example of this message as her songs have a unique sound with universal human sentiments about love that are easily received. Her lyrics are amazing as well. You can tell by simply listening to the project that there was a lot of time a dedication behind it. It is very rare for me to come across music that demands me to stop what I am doing to carefully pay attention to the words the artist is spewing….and Jade certainly makes me listen.
The standout track is easily “Beautiful Problems” produced by Chuck Inglish of The Cool Kids. The song just pours with human emotion. Many feelings in this world are certainly a paradox. Think about it, how can a problem be beautiful? Just listen to the song and her smooth vocals will help you understand. Currently, this artist resides in New York performing at locations such as BB Kings, SOB’s, the Knitting Factory, Europa, Club Element, among other places.

I truly hope to see Jade do big things in this industry, because we certainly need more quality soulful acts. She will fit perfectly among the likes of artists such as Alicia Keys, Melanie Fiona, Lily Allen, and yet she will still stand apart as her songwriting is unlike any other act out right now. For more information on Jade, please check her myspace (www.myspace.com/jadeismusic ) and be sure to get her EP, “It’s My Heart, Cookie.”

If you're from the DMV area, you've likely come across David Correy. I can't say that I've been to one of his shows, but I have seen videos of his live performance. It is no big task to soon realize how talented this guy is, especially when you hear the electrifying single "Dreamin'". His sound is reminiscent of that of Kevin Rudolf's; however, what distinguishes David is his telling story - a product of Brazil, he was adopted by a Maryland family and, in spite of constant battles throughout his life, such as a severe case of nasal polyps at one point, here he is, pursuing his dream and creating a lane for himself.

Mixtape: Esso - Off the Wall

. Aug 12, 2009
0 comments

To be frank, we've all been flooded with a barrage of MJ tributes, and while the artists have been truly sincere, the feeling of disgust comes naturally when there's too much of something. In fact, it's just passé for artists to rush quickly in order to hop on the "new new". I must admit there have been a few songs that I like, but I actually don't think that Esso necessarily gets off the hook. While I wish that he had worked on this project before the unfortunate passing of the King, I admire the work and time he put into it - from the visuals of the video to the final product.

Words from ESSO: So the time has finally come for the rest of the world to hear the project that Woody and I have been working so hard on since April. I can’t lie it’s kinda bittersweet for it to be gaining the attention that is has over the past weeks since Mike’s untimely passing. Honestly we set out to create an incredible project that would pay homage to Michael Jackson’s musical legacy not his life as a whole. No one song or project could ever achieve that lofty goal.

Woody and I set out months ago to rework one of the most important transitional albums in the history of popular music as we know it. The album that catapulted Michael Jackson to Thriller proportions and left us unforgettable songs like “Rock With You,” “Off The Wall,” “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough,” “Girlfriend” and “She’s Outta My Life.” We turned those songs into “Just Feel It,” “Life Like This,” “Don’t Stop” and “Girlfriend” (but with a different spin). Michael has inspired countless entertainers across genres and Woody and I are no different that than many other members of our generation that grew up with one glove trying to moonwalk across our living rooms.

I sincerely hope that no one takes our project as an attempt to capitalize off of the death of a King. This project means way too much to me for it to ever be misunderstood. In the wake of the 30th Anniversary of Off The Wall it is with the utmost respect and reverence that we proudly present you the product of our labor for the past months. We hope that you enjoy the experience of listening to it as much as we enjoyed the experience of creating it.

Diplo puts his touch on song that is instantly connected with the cult classic film "Ferris Bueller." This has a feel good vibe to it, especially with the dope remix. This joint makes me think of my childhood, can you imagine doing this shit that Ferris did??? Crazy, skipped outta school HELLUVA lotta times, made his principal look lika damn fool, had a fine girl he got outta school too impersonating her dad, convinced his friend into taking his ride, jumped into a city parade.....ok I'm gonna stop. I think ima see this movie again asap. Simply classic and Diplo really knows how to get the party started.

MIXTAPE: Greespan - When the Sky Turns Green

.

The mixtape is finally here and I am very satisfied with the results. "When The Sky Turns GREEN" is a collection of music created with imagery of elevation and free will. Each song has been designed carefully to offer listeners an accurate depiction of sovereignty with representations of the soulful-side of hip-hop from the perspective of a Baltimore artist. The content in such songs as "Wings," "Sky Dive," and "Outlaw" each cry out freedom as Greenspan breathes life into his artistry through actualization. It is a very smooth project with soulful cuts like my favorite "Khloe Kardashian" and "You Know My Name." Greenspan is a product of Baltimore and it is evident in his unique delivery and flow .
As far as the production, "When the Sky Turns Green" has a lot to offer. Throughout the project, Judah offers some heavy beats from the mellow introduction "Is Falling", the epic sound of "Sky Dive", to the hard-hitting edge of "Latitude." Another notable stand-out beat is by Kleph Dolla with the jazzy "Khloe Kardashian." If you are a hip-hop head there is definitely something here for you....so what are you waiting for?

Now if you have been following the site, you guys know I am a big Art head. Huge fan on that tip, so when I caught these dope Photoshop works of art I was going. Its a fusion of classical art from the renaissance and such with grafitti and hip hop culture from the new renaissance on the Q-Tip tip (lol). Check it, this is was from a contest by Worth 1000 back a couple months back, but I just peeped it recently. I picked two of my favorites below.

The piece above is my favorite from the two, because the kid just looks gangsta with those soft-ass stockings and blue hoodie just mean-mugging with the spray can and a stoneless expression. Crazy colors with that one and the tag on the back is ill. The Girl below is just hanging out at the park and it just looks timeless. Upgrade her old school clothing and throw on some Nike Dunks on her and this looks like something you could still see nowadays.

Slowly and steadily, Cayan (Ky-ann) is proving himself as an up and coming act in the DMV. On this track, Cayan goes on his smooth tip even putting his singing skills on the record with a beat by Soulful that is reminiscent of some old Ye with sampling on that "Girls, Girls, Girls" vibe. Cayan always stands out to me because he loves some wordplay and here and there he got some gems that always make me crack a smirk from the wit he got. Listen midway into the 1st verse for some examples. A solid track from the young act, I can't wait to hear what else will be on his EP The Protege coming soon!!

Just saw this stand-up tonight, straight comedy...especially for all my latinos out there (STAND UP!) I'm not the biggest fan of his sitcom show because it is kind of tame and toned down. I mean it has to be since it is played on Nickolodeon and stuff. I mean think about Bob Saget on Full House/America's Funniest Home Videos and compare that to his stand up and his memorable clip in "Don't Be a Menace..." This is Lopez's time to shine saying whatever he wants to say, however he wants to say it in front of a crowd of over 14,0000 in Texas. Anyways, if you got a chance to check this out on HBO you should definitely watch it.

Flashback Video: Cam'ron - What Means the World To You

Just got finished watching Entourage. This episode was aight, but I was hype to see them play this song at the end during the credits. This was my jam back in like 9th grade, I remember playing this song out blastin up in my headphones. This is back when Killa Cam was hella dope and 20 lbs. fatter. I used to love "Horse & Carriage" with (Murda) Mase and Charli Baltimore. "Confession of Fire" was a pretty solid album from Cam. Anyways, go back in the time and check the track and look at Jim Jones acting a fool

Music Video: Marques Houston - Sunset

I'm a Marques Houston fan, def loved his first self-titled album and hell I even listened to some of his tracks when he was with Immature / IMX when I was a youngin. I'm on my soft shit lol, but this track is pretty smooth, I'm surprised why the song/video did not come out last year. Management problem? Label issues? Welcome to the game. It happens to everybody, even the best of em. I mean this dude had a solid single in "Circle" a little bit before this. Nevertheless, the white guitars in the video are dope.

MP3s: Michael Jackson: The Remix Suite 1

Universal Motown will put together 20 remixes of Michael Jackson made the industry's top production acts. So far five of those renditions have been released which you can find below. Although I am very excited about this project, I still wonder why this homage could not have paid when the great artist was still alive. I know Akon, Yeezy and Will.I.Am worked with him, but it just was not done right and it went pretty much unnoticed in the end. Nevertheless, let the great king leave on with the tracks below:

The Hangover Tour – with 88-Keys, Bobby Ray, Asher Roth, and Kid Cudi – made its way to the nation’s capitol on August 5, with Kid Cudi as the last act. In spite of how late it was – around 2 am – the crowd was still rocking to Cudi’s set, especially when this track came on.

EGHCK! I just said that to say, cause nobody says it likes Clipse. I'm seriously counting down the days until this VA duo drops their next album "Til the Casket Drops." I'm Good has a nice vibe with brillant production from the Neptunes. Makes you wanna start out your morning with this song as you get dressed and make plans for the day. I'm Good, You Good?

Ok, so Jack Splash either has a lot of connects in high places or he just doing something right with the music. First, he does a decent track with R. Kelly and know he is working that dude Lupe Fiasco. Only time will tell, but I like the jumping vibe from this song. Of course, I wasn't convinced until I heard the very end of the track where Lupe straight blesses it. You guy convinced bout Jack????

MP3: Mr. Music ft. LA - Take You to Another World (Club Mix)

The family Gowhere sent us this exclusive track from Mr. Music & LA, after a successful release of their debut album, What Do You Do? I've always been impressed by the creativity of this duo; they seem to just mesh well with each other, as if they're capable of producing an album daily. It really does seem like that's how their chemistry is.

As stated by GoWhere Hip Hop, "Take You To Another World" is another step forward in the growth of LA & Mr. Music with both artists continuing to evolve utilizing different sounds and styles. The single is another eclectic, upbeat club/pop record with lyrics that effectively paints the picture of Mr. Music wooing his female interest. Mr. Music stands out with his poignant vocals reaching ranges long-time fans have yet to hear before. The transitions from verse to hook are once again smooth and fluid, especially when LA comes in on the 3rd verse. LA begins his verse with a break-neck flow and illustrates his versatility as he continues when he goes back and forth with Mr. Music shortly after, before concluding on a double meaning with some Lil' Weezy-esque delivery. It's another complete track from beginning to end - relevant verses, a catchy hook, and top-notch production that you can download above and add to your LA & Mr. Music library."

The Hangover tour - featuring 88-Keys, Bobby Ray, Asher Roth, and Kid Cudi - blessed the 9:30 Club on August 5th, in Washington, DC. What better location to end the great hangover than at the nation's capitol. In this footage, you can catch Asher performing "Lark on My Go-Kart", "Cannon Freestyle", "Blunt Cruisin'", and "La Di Da", as well as his paying a special tribute to the late Sean Taylor.

Mr. London and Boykins have teamed with the electro-inspired producer Machine Drum to redo the heartbreak classic released on "This Charming Mixtape." This is a totally different feel on the song, yet the message still remains and the result remains amazing. Definitely worth the download.

This was a great documentary about the history of Go-Go. I haven't been able to find it anywhere else, after extensive online searches. I apologize for the quality; it's a VHS rip. Even if you don't like Go-Go this is a great documentary to watch. It does a good job of showing how Go-Go was influenced by West African music, and it explains how it influenced many of today's genres (eg. Hip-Hop, Indie, Pop, etc). Check it out and let us know what you think. Peace.

Description:
The definitive documentary on the history of Go-Go, Washington, DC's home grown music form. This documentary explores the African roots of the music, it's humble beginning on the streets and clubs of Washington, DC and the politics surrounding its influence on the youth. Ok, you know that if I'm blogging this late (or early, depending on your interpretation), it's because I have that piff for you. Seriously, I meant to post this as soon as I received this in the inbox, but I forget already what I was doing that prevented the posting. In any case, A-List Society is a group from Delaware, consisting of Mar Mcloud, Mcnyce, and Jay Ferno.
