I wish I would have been at Glastonbury 2008. Check out Jay spit on Estelle's hit "American Boy." How could Jay "retire" when he is still this good....he killed this performance. I love this joint so much I'm gonna post the lyrics below cause after I saw this joint once and kept on watchin it over and over to catch every line. So Ima do yall a favor:

"London bridges are falling down
Not bridges but britches when Jigga's in town
Ladies show me ya knickers
I might let you kick it if you don't tell the misses
Quick run before the tabloids come
Run from the night or we end up in the sun
I"m just taking a piss....unless you gon' do it
Oh nellies, no so Machiavelli bring 2 pack of condoms
When you come to the telly
Tell me, if this is true
If diamonds are a best friend my crew,
Would like to send an invitation to you,
We'd like to invite to our family... jewelry I mean
Cause my jewels currently is being guarded by the queen."

Jaguar Skills Hoooo!!...

. Jun 29, 2008

I have been pretty busy lately with a bunch of different things, but I managed to take some time out yesterday to listen to music that was stocked up in my iTunes. After sorting through a bunch of different mixes I came across this 48 minute hip hop mix by DJ Jaguar Skills. Although the name sounded very familiar, I had not heard any of his music before, so I decided to give it a few spins.I was immediately taken back as the mix started with "King Tim III" and just kept moving on from there. Needless to say I was jamming the whole way through. I can hardly explain how hype I was about this mix. DJ Jaguar Skills was able to seamlessly mix 800 CLASSIC Hip Hop tracks in a 48 minute set.I soon began to quiz myself and after passing with flying colors(haha), I decided to dig up some more information on this dude.

I found out that DJ Jaguar Skills is a fresh DJ out of London, England who has a spot on the Trevor Nelson show every Saturday night at 7:30 GMT on BBC radio."After honing his DJ skills playing parties in East London’s coolest underground clubs and bars, Jaguar Skills developed his own brand of party music. Mixing Hip-Hop, Dance, Dub, Disco, Ragga and Rock with his own productions and remixes, Jaguar Skills quickly made a name for himself, smashing party after party. After releasing a mix tape for Maharishi, he caught the ear of Jade Jagger, who invited him to spin at her Jezebel party night at Ibiza’s Pacha club. After three great gigs, he was asked back to be the Jezebel Resident DJ the following year.On the production side he has currently produced tracks with Lupe Fiasco, Sway, The Beatnuts and Mattafix – while his remixes have been the prize passion of any DJ who owns them."The 48 minute mix originally dropped it 2007 and he regularly drops mixes on his blog. Check out a few of the mixes below and be sure to stop by his blog and myspace for more information and mixes.Click on the covers to download.

The Game - Dope Boys feat. Travis Barker

Ok...this will be the last music video of the day, I promise. I don't know if it's going to be the official video but I just had to post this video, because I love the collaboration. Barker is KILLIN those drums (unlike me in Rockband) and The Game just sounds so hard on this joint. It's not much of a video, but it's that classic Barker kinda video. The Game is too funny cuz he is so chill just posted up on the wall. Well It's a sick video...Enjoy!

T.I. - No Matter What

.

Damn...listen to the lyrics on this joint. Awhile back when this track came out we made a post with the lyrics....so I'm gonna do it again underneath the video so you can follow them, T.I. is speaking from his heart on this one. Let's hope he gets all of his legal troubles resolved soon.

(Verse 1)
Never have you seen in ya lifetime
A more divine southern rapper with a swagga like mine
Facin all kinda time but smile like I'm fine
Brag with such passion and shine without tryin
Believe me, pains a small thing to a giant
I was born without a dime
Out the gutter I climbed
Spoke my mind and didn't stutter one time
Ali said even the greatest gotta suffer sometime
So I huff and puff rhymes
Lyrics so sick wit it
Set the standards in Atlanta how to get get get it
So you up and coming rappers wanna diss, just kill it
I'm officially the realest, point blank, period
Whether I still live in the hood or just visit
Whatever you can do in the hood I done did it
That's why the dope boys and the misfits feel it
This still the city long as Tip live it, listen

(Chorus)
I ain't dead (nah) I ain't done(nah)
I ain't scared(of what), I ain't run(from what)
But still I stand (yeah)
No matter what VA here I am
I ain't break(never), I ain't fold(never)
They hate me more(so? )
Yeah I know
Here I go
No matter what shortie, here I go
No matter what shortie

(Verse 2)
You let the blog sites and the magazines tell it
I'm showed to b jail until 2027
Rather see me in the cell then
Instead of this new McLaruen
God will take you to hell, just to get you to heaven
So even tho it's heavy, the load I will carry
Grin and still bear it, win and still share it
Apologies to the fans, I hope you can understand it
Like a change in direction, even when you ain't planned it
All you can do it handle it, worst thing you can do is panic
Use it to your advantage, avoid insanity matters
To conquer, every obstacle, make impossible possible
Even when winning illogical, losing is still far from optional
Yeah they wanna see you shot up in the hospital
But, one life like punches, block the counter like a boxer do
Been locked inside mi casa too long, I did a song
To make it known that the king lives on

(Chorus)

(Verse 3)
Even the solitude, that still know how to do
I show you how to do, what you do, you ain't gotta clue
All you do is follow dudes
Sound like a lotta dudes
I'll weather whatever storm
Make it out without a bruise
I understand why, now when my hands tied
They take shots cause if I'm out it's a landslide
But revenge is best served as a cold dish
And suckas will get served better know this
Guess it was understood, for me it was over with
But I don't quit, if you ain't noticed yet
They couldn't wait to say goodnight shorty
So they can try to rhyme, act and look like shorty
Go get a beat from toomp, and make a hook like shorty
Before ya know it I'm back what it look like shorty
I lost my partner and my daughter in the same year
Somehow I rise above my problems and remain here
Yeah, and I hope the picture painted clear
If your hearts fill with faith then you can't fear
Wonder how I face years and I'm still chillin
[732 stand up]
Easy, let go and let god deal with it, ya dig

(Chorus)

Finally, Finally, Finally...it's about damn time. I remember this was one of the tracks that stood out to me when I first heard the CD, my favorite part is when Robert breaks it down from 2:38. But yeah, this video is definitely a better look than the other one and makes the group look more legit.

Artistic Integrity: Hopper v. Nas

. Jun 27, 2008
0 comments

Aight, I'm back with another post for Artistic Integrity, now if you don't know about this segment just check the last post as it was inspired by that Wale track.

Edward Hopper - Nighthawks (1942)

What is the first thing you realize about this painting? For me, it was the damn isolation of all of the figures, especially the center figure that is going to be the focus of my post. Even though there is a couple, they seem disinterested and distant at the time. Hopper's painting shows that even though there can be a lot of people in the city (inspired by Manhattan), there is still loneliness.

Nas - Drunk By Myself

I got to say one of my favorite CDs ever is the The Lost Tapes by Nas, so when I saw this painting I immediately thought about that Nas track because it is essentially about depression and solitude. The dude in the middle of the painting is by his lonesome and it is almost assumed that he is drinking away the pain. Now of course I could have put that classic Mobb Deep and Q-Tip track, but I remembered these Nas lyrics (3rd Verse/ 2:41) and it just fit, I can picture the dude just saying these lyrics in his head:

"The reason that I want to be alone
Tired of all the things that went wrong
That would have went right if I would have did it on my own
Take another swigg
The more I drink, the more I think bad thoughts
Fake friends who hung around who wanna bring you down
Not knowing who to trust, rumors about niggas coming through
Supposedly to shoot at us, not knowing what was true
Or what to believe, that's why I'm on the low lately
Choosing a Henny bottle over a friend..."

Aight, so there it is, Hopper and Nas seem to catch the same vibe on this painting and track. If you guys see this painting and another song comes to mind, post up ya comments and lyrics. Let me know what ya think.

Music Is A Time Machine - By: Rahzel

.

Remember Rahzel? If you mother only knew?? All I Know?? The stuff he did with the Roots?? He was nice man, definitely on Doug E. Fresh's level. Well the other day I was just chillin watchin TV and saw this pretty dope commercial by Fuse TV and the music just sounded familiar and I almost was positive it was Rahzel and surely enough it was.
Check out this commercial that goes into the many fads and phases of hip hop with the Yeezy glasses, to high tops, fades, Adidas, track jackets, etc.
(Not saying that those things make hip hop and that it can be commercialized and reduced to simply material objects, but they are definitely a part of its history).
But anyway Rahzel killed it, check it out:

Music Is a Time Machine

And since I already mentioned Rahzel, I gotta drop these classics as well:

1. Mick Luter

Mick Luter is the premier artist of Chicago. From coming up with Lupe Fiasco to sharing the microphone with Slum Village, The Dramatics, Bump J, Yung Berg and the late Stack Bundles, Mick has the ability to captivate listeners with his vivid look into the life of coming up on the west side of Chicago. He boasts production from A list producers such as NO ID(Common, G Unit, Toni Braxton, etc.), SC(Mary J. Blige, Puffy, Mobb Deep), Buckwild(D.I.T.C.) and Brian "All Day" Miller(Kanye West) and he has a flow and wordplay that is unmatched. He won the Source Battle in 2000 defeating over 200 emcees. 2. Lungz

Immersing himself in such legendary musical influences as Mobb Deep, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Pharcyde, ATCQ, Al Green, and Curtis Mayfield; Lungz has been able to successfully transition from being just a respected battle/freestyle rapper to an artist capable of crafting songs utilizing a wide range of cadences and rhyme structures. Lungz acknowledges his now infamous "My Town" which created a fervor after Chicago Rocks 2007 as being not a defining apex; but only one of many more anthems to come. He refuses to allow himself to be characterized by only one song, when there are others that he feels challenged him more to create such as "Powerful Music" and "Incredible", and therefore have more significance to him as a demonstration of what to expect in the future. Recognizing and embracing his growth from a youth to a young man, Lungz is giving his breakout album the appropriately title "Transition", which represents him leaving "all the dumb shit" behind and evolving into a complete artist. Lungz wants you to experience his life through his lyrics, and not the fantasy world so often portrayed in rap. With The Flight School mixtape already available, Lungz is poised to release his first full-length album "Transition" in 2008, as well as "A Breathe Of Fresh Air" with DJ's Cosm Roks & Roper of The Hip Hop Project as a supplementary mixtape. "Transition" will feature mic comrades Swift, Soze, Imam T.H.U.G., and YG with Panik (Molemen), Swift, Supa Mario, and Q-Hefna handling production.

So there has been a story going around the media that the sound/beat of Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" was actually stolen by a group like Creaky Boards and their song appropriately titled "The Songs I Didn't Write"

Watch the video and tell me what you think...be sure to watch CNN's broadcast on the issue on Entertainment Weekly's joint. You be the judge....personally somebody got TO be stealing from somebody cuz they sound SO MUCH ALIKE!

Here is the AMP (“Automated Musical Personality”) Bot, specifically designed to follow you and play your favorite tunes. Much like the movement of a segway, the Bot's movement tends to move by way of a 2-wheel base that doesn't tip over, and when set to tracking mode, this robot will keep tracking your movement so as to face the speakers toward you. Even installed is an obstacle avoidance system so that it doesn't bump into anything. Even more interesting, it'll dance for you and have a light display when syncing to your music.

Euro 2008 Update

For all you football/soccer fans out there, the number of teams has whittled down to four with the following teams: Turkey, Germany, Russia, and Spain. I thought initially that Portugal and Netherlands would make it to this round, but as has been the case with the tourney this year, there have been several surprises: the 2004 Euro Champion Greece couldn't even pass the first round, nor could the World Cup runner-ups France do the same.

The next match will be between Turkey-Germany on Wednesday, July 25 at 2:45 pm, while the next match between Russia-Spain on Thursday, July 26 at 2:45 pm. Personally, I'm now rooting for a Turkey-Spain Finals.

Enjoy!

I was flipping through the channels around 6am this morning and I came across this show called "Hip Hop Harry". To be honest, I really don't know how I feel about the show. I had an obvious problem with the fact that the title was "Hip Hop Harry" because I feel like this is another example where hip hop becomes a packaged entity for commercial consumption. What does it really mean for the main character to be "hip hop" Harry? To make matters worse, I was angered by his physical appearance as he regularly sports a bucket hat, a chain with an "H" pendant, a large faced watch, baggy clothing, and shell toes. I guess this is the visual representation of what hip hop culture and fashion is all about.

Despite my critique of certain elements of the show, the show IS educational and tries to get kids active through dance. After thinking about if for a while, I started to wonder whether or not this might in fact be a good thing for rap music (Please bear with me and let me flesh this one out). Even though I don't like the title of the show and Hip Hop Harry's attire, the songs themselves paint a different picture of rap, one that is rarely depicted in the media today. It depicts rap as a tool or merely an outlet for expression rather than something that is affiliated with "thugs, violence, and money. Although the educational lyrics may sound corny and may be viewed by some as a watering down or commercializing of rap music, I do think this show is able to cater to an audience who may not like to hear the hum-drum sing along songs of shows such as Barney and Sesame Street. In doing this, this show may be able to capture the attention of different audiences of whom the other shows do not thus instilling important educational messages. The one thing I actually liked about the show is that they have people who can dance, which served to extinguish some of my resentment . Usually on shows like this, you see people who are "hip hop dancing "meaning that they are all over the place doing cliche moves such as "the running man" and "the sprinkler". On this show however some of these kids have skill, popping and breaking with ease (Peep the girl @ 2:01 in the second clip).

In the end, I am left with no words about this show as I don'w know whether or not I like it (due to its educational message and somewhat positive images of rap music) or hate it (due to its commercializing of hip hop). Let me know what you think...Be sure to check out some of the clips below.

Artistic Integrity: Friedrich v. Wale

Ok, so I'm starting a new segment with Ill Vibes called "Artistic Integrity" inspired from the Wale track off his last mixtape. Music is a form of self expression and provides messages, it's a form of art. So, here's the plan...I'm a big fan of Art and Music, so I'm going to fuse the two. I'm going to drop a classic artwork, capture the vibe and compare it to song. I know, it's a little out there but stick with it, let's see what happens. So to top off the series, who better to do it with than the inspiration....Wale.

Caspar David Friedrich - Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog

Friedrich was a German artist inspired by the sublime power of nature and its audacity. This joint captures that exactly, as this guy is on top of the world, yet at the same time seems so small with what is around him. His stance exudes confidence like he is inspired by what he is seeing. This is what he had to say about his own artwork:

"The painter should paint not only what he has in front of him, but also what he sees inside himself. If he sees nothing within, then he should stop painting what is in front of him."

Friedrich is talking about originality, and that he has to be true to himself or else he is putting out nothing. Sounds like the hip hop game huh?

Wale - "Artistic Integrity"

The Artistic Integrity - Wale

George's interlude sets the tone of the track. Wale is talking about doing him, doing what he wants to do, putting the music that he wants to put out, expressing himself and not what the media wants. It is his artistic integrity. It's similar to that Friedrich quote, the painter was saying he is gonna paint what he feels, not what people want to see. Check the Wale rhymes:

"So they put me in a box with he and he and them, which is more of a circus than a fair / They work to get theirs/So to work to get theirs I'd be nothing but a replica lookin in the mirror/ Respect is still there but yo boy's right here/ We apple n oranges, but everybody pears"

Wale's quote is similar to dude, cuz he is not just trying to spit like cats in front of him cause then he would be nothing, just a "replica looking in the mirror."

Drop your thoughts...

Everyone who knows me knows that I love watching Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel. I was recently checking out PopSci.com (another favorite) and I came across this interesting article about the Glyptapanteles wasp, often called the Voodoo wasp (which is messed up in the first place, but that is another conversation). Basically this wasp impregnates caterpillars and other insects with about 80-90 eggs which then hatch and breakout of the host insect's body. The crazy thing is that once impregnated, the host insect ceases movement until the eggs hatch at which point "[it] involuntarily protects them from attack by thrashing wildly in the presence of predators". Read the full article here and be sure to check out the clip below.

When I was young, I used to listen to all kinds of music, different time periods and different genres from The Beatles, The Four Seasons, Nirvana, Sublime, Marvin Gaye, etc. However, when I came across Nas' Illmatic, 2pac's All Eyez on Me, Donell Jones' Where I Wanna Be, and Babyface's For The Cool In You I just became consumed solely with Soul and Hip Hop culture. It wasn't just the sound of the music itself, it was the personality and emotion that was put into the music. So I got caught in the genres, swaiting for more and more music to come out slowly getting away from the other types of music I used to listen to. I had a close minded perspective which I should have dropped because in music, everybody borrows elements from other genres and time periods as its just a creative process to get that fresh sound.

For about the last year I started to open up again after I started listening to some Daft Punk and I started seeing a lot more value in electronica. I used to be one of those people just saying techno is boring and repetitive, but then I started listening to certain cats and I stopped feeling that way. For the record, I don't like all techno but I am definitely not putting labels on it anymore, I give it a chance and I listen.

I got heavy into Theophilus London because of his amazing sound with Machine Drum as he was dropping 80s and electronica beats from him to spit to. Check out my interview with him if you haven't yet. Crystal Castles are a beast duo that have put together some beast electronica beats, their song "Courtship Dating" was sampled by Timbaland on "Ayo Technology" and Crystal Castles even sampled Grand Master Flash on their track "Magic Spells."

So, slowly I started listening to other genres again, the Australian group Cut Copy has a sound that fuses trance/electronica and indie rock as their CD "In Ghost Colours" is simply a masterpiece from top to finish. Similarly, the Canadian group Chromeo is obviously inspired from electronica and has a fresh 80s sound on their album "Fancy Footwork." MGMT and Death Cab for Cutie are other groups that are doing some crazy original things.

Chromeo "Bonafied Lovin'"

I kept on hearing rave reviews about this group Portishead, and I kept on ignoring them until Joe Budden made a mixtape based on them called, "Mood Musik Third: Joe Budden meets Portishead" that blew me away. So I got the CD and I started listening and I was thinking this is not my kind of music, but then I started feeling it. It's not something I can bump all the time but I like that joint. A couple of weeks later I saw Mickey Factz sample Portishead on his track "Machine Gun." It's a circle, music has no boundaries, genres are not static, so consumers should not be either.

I did an interview with Chester French a couple of days ago and Max dropped the name Vampire Weekend, so I got their CD and I started liking that stuff too and indie rock is not one of my favorite genres. Charles Hamilton even got a little rock in him as he sampled Offspring on that track "Rock Star" girl from his mixtape. I'm feeling scatterbrained now just dropping names, but that is just how music flows in my head, anything I'm feeling or thinking at the time is what I will listen to. By the way, if you don't have that Coldplay, get it, it's a soothing chill CD with incredible songwriting.

Coldplay - Viva La Vida

Another cat I'm going to vouch for is Jason Mraz, on his last LP at least. The kid got some soul in him and it is a pretty sensitive, touching, and inspiring CD at the same time.

Jason Mraz - I'm Yours

Ok, so there that is the last couple of months where I have randomly been picking up music outside of my spectrum. That is why I support cats in hip hop being true to unique music, Mickey Factz, Wale (Mark Ronson is a G, he didnt' win a grammy for best producer for no reason), Theophilus London, Charles Hamilton, Kidz in the Hall, N.E.R.D., Cool Kids, etc. If you are looking for something new, something good, check the music from the people I named throughout this joint. Hip Hop/R&B are still at my heart, but other genres are starting to get me to catch feelings.

Album List Clockwise:

1. Coldplay -Viva La Vida
2. Jason Mraz - We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things
3. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
4. Chester French - Love the Future (Will Be Released Soon)
5. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
