New shit new shit!!!!
Let's peruse the essentials of cool ...
Live at Indiana University:
This is not a new song, but this is the latest video for it:
I'm very excited about this song, b/c I love this song so damn much:
Incredible speech, all in all. Here's the introductory part of his speech:
B.O.B. is still under the radar and I think he can eventually make moves. He got talent as he produces his own music. Cloud 9 is a nice track, but he got a lot of his buzz from the "Haterz Everywhere" track from a couple months ago. I don't know how i felt about his lyrics on Haterz, but the track is OFFICIAL. B.O.B. is improving though because I heard a lot of his new material at Rock the Bells, and it's pretty nice sounding like a mix of T.I. / early Outkast. Cloud 9 is def a chill track to listen to.
That shirt that Asher is wearing is ill!!! I need to cop a few of those!
Blender recently created this, with commentary from Girl Talk and Randy Newman:
As if this song hasn't been remixed enough, Mos Def does his thing:
Cameos from Consequence and Kid Cudi:
For those of you guys that have missed the last couple of weeks of Mickey Factz drops here is the Leak 2: The Inspiration below:
Check it out. He's actually pretty good:
This ish is ill!
So damn....I'm surprised I never saw the similarities before. Not that I am a big Hall & Oates fan, but I definitely knew about them. On the other hand, I have not stopped listening to Chromeo in last couple of months as at least one of their tracks always hits my daily rotation. Well a couple of days ago Daryl Hall invited Chromeo to be a guest on their show and that is when I found out how much Chromeo admired Hall & Oates. Furthermore, Chromeo is helping Hall & Oates out with their new record!!!!
Chromeo definitely caught onto an amazing sound with the easy-listening voice of Hall & Oates, the imaginative and infectious 80 synths grooves of electronica, and a dash of swagger. Now, I'm going to post some Hall & Oates tracks that made me see the obvious influence...
Ah man, what can I say about this group. They came out of nowhere and surprised the hell outta me. Their CD "In Ghost Colours" is definitely one of my top 5 cds of 2008 so far and I can't wait to see this group live at the 9:30 club in DC on September 26th. It's going to be an amazing event and iLL Vibes gonna represent.
Okay, okay, yes I was excited about Michael Phelps, and I was definitely blown away by other magnificent performances by other US athletes. But, to me, what was the ultimate culmination for American sports was the gold medal victory by the US men's basketball team. That was the main reason why I wanted to watch the Olympics, and nothing more could've excited me than a victory by our NBA stars. Truth be told, the rest of the world is getting amazingly good at this sport, but we are the true warriors of this sport, and nothing would've shocked me more than another less-than-steller performance by our boys on the court. So this is to them - the Redeem Team, the core group of guys who focused for three years to get to this point, all the while supporting the other athletes donning the Red, White, and Blue.
I don't know what it is but this collabo just seems to work as these guys have put out tracks that just bang in the club from Culo, Toma, The Anthem, and here comes "Crazy." Pitbull's last single sampled the dance club favorite "Calabria" by Enur and this time around they have sampled another big electro/techno favorite: "Cream" by Federico Franchis....wait for 1:00.
Wow, check out this Cuban taekwondo athlete deebo this ref and everyone else!!

So here and there I like to bump some other genres, mostly electro and a mild dash of rock. The Black Kids are like that perfect mix, as some of the tracks on their LP "Partie Traumatic" almost sound like something N.E.R.D. would make especially their newest single "Look at Me (When I Rock Witchoo)." I was deep in Cut Copy as their cd "In Ghost Colours" is arguably one of the best CDs of 2008, and the lead singer of Black Kids sounds strangely close to the lead singer of Cut Copy. The Black Kids got their big break with the song "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You", the video was crazy but I'm a big fan of the remix by The Twelves (You got to listen to the beat). I remember I heard the remix first back in October and it started getting a lot of attention on electro blogs like Disco Belle and ever since then I was just waiting for more to leak.
This kid is a problem:
I used to bump this joint all the time. The beat is crazy...old school at its best.
It's time once again to break out the notebooks for another old school hip hop lesson. This time I am talking about "The Lessons" which were started by Double Dee and Steinski and continued by DJ's who followed them. Via Antidote Records:
"Steinski (advertising writer, DJ and record collector Steve Stein) produced his first record in 1983. In response to a nationwide call for entries by Tommy Boy Records for the "Hey Mr. DJ Play That Beat Down By Law Switch The Licks Mastermix Contest," he and partner Double Dee (engineer and studio wizard Douglas DiFranco) produced "The Payoff Mix". A panel of 10 judges, including Afrika Bambaataa, Shep Pettibone and Arthur Baker, unanimously chose the Double Dee & Steinski mix as the winner.
Within two weeks "The Payoff Mix" became a Top 10 record on urban radio nationwide. The mix couldn't be sold due to clearance problems (of course), and it is still one of the most desirable and prized bootleg recordings in hip hop.
"The Payoff Mix" became the first record in a series now known as The Lessons. Double Dee and Steinski followed up with cut and paste landmark "Lesson Two: The James Brown Mix," which Fatboy Slim called "the record that always gets the crowd going." Then came "Lesson 3: The History of Hip Hop." The Lessons series quickly became highly sought after collectibles and led to homage records by DJ Shadow (Lesson 4), Cut Chemist (Lessons 4 and 6), DJ Format (The English Lesson), and DJ Bombjack (Lesson 7)".Check out the Lessons below. Simply classic. A must for anyone who claims that they are a fan of hip hop
Four years after the release of their critically acclaimed debut "Connected," The Foreign Exchange returns with their sophomore set, "Leave It All Behind."
Consisting of singer/songwriter Phonte and producer Nicolay, The Foreign Exchange came together via the online hip-hop community Okayplayer.com in 2002. After trading files through Instant Messenger for over a year, Nicolay (living in his native Holland at the time) and Phonte (a Raleigh, NC resident) completed their debut album before they ever met each other in person. The album, "Connected," was released in 2004 to positive reviews, and was praised by legendary DJ's such as Jazzy Jeff, King Britt, and DJ Spinna for its inventive mix of hip-hop, R&B, and electronica.
"Leave It All Behind" finds The Foreign Exchange much closer in geography (Nicolay has since become a resident of Wilmington, NC), but located much further from their hip-hop origins. The duo's second full-length is a dark, multilayered affair that features Phonte showcasing his abilities as an exceptional lead and harmony vocalist, while Nicolay extends his musical palette to include sprinklings of jazz, downtempo, and house. The lush, Darien Brockington-assisted "Take Off the Blues" picks up where Connected's sleeper hit "Come Around" left off, while the complex polyrhythms and dreamy synthesizers of "Sweeter Than You" are described by Phonte as "swing jazz for the next century." Marc Mac (of legendary UK production team 4hero), also contributes a string arrangement to the duo's glorious cover of Stevie Wonder's oft-forgotten 1991 gem, "If She Breaks Your Heart."
In addition to appearances from longtime FE affiliates Darien Brockington and Yahzarah, the album also features guest shots from producer/keyboardist Zo! and vocalist Muhsinah.
Noo (pronounced New) is a hip hop artist out of D.C. Via his myspace, "Noo is lyrically Rakim with a D.C. dimeanor, A rap style like no other and swagg out of this world". I definitely love this track because he manages to fuse both hip hop (Dougie Fresh's "The Show") and go-go. Check it out below.
Check out this dope design by Sarah Schneider of a medical rehabilitation center located in the Austrian Alps. The center is built to accommodate about 50 patients and features scenic balcony views of the mountains and the surrounding forests. I am really feeling the organic and free flowing look. Behind every blog is a purpose, we hope. And so it is here, at Ill Vibes. There's no format, no organization, no agenda - simply a cornucopia of thoughts we hope to memorialize in this Internet medium. What common ground you may find is the interests shared among the administrators, four university students whose passions for music (especially the state of hip hop), art, travel, philosophy, comedy, dance, politics, pop culture, fashion, and - quite frankly - the good life have brought them together to share their essentials of cool. From reviewing the latest CD or introducing the world to the next incredible artist to documenting various travels or criticizing a latest concert, you'll find it all here and more! So enjoy, and definitely leave comments. Not only do we love to express ourselves, but one of our greatest traits lies in our listening to other people expressing themselves.
