Democracy Now...

. Sep 8, 2008

I am pretty pissed off today because I just found out that Amy Goodman (Journalist/Anchor) and Nicole Salazar (Journalist/Producer) of Democracy Now were arrested outside of the RNC as they attempted to interview protesters. The police, who were equipped with rubber bullets, pepper spray, and concussion grenades, are contemplating charging producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar with felony probable cause riot charges. Amy Goodman, while attempting to question the police about the unlawful detainment of the two producers, was arrested and faces misdemeanor charges for obstruction of a legal process and interference with a peace officer. For those of you who don't know, Democracy Now is a "national, daily, independent, award-winning news program hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez. Democracy Now!’s War and Peace Report provides our audience with access to people and perspectives rarely heard in the U.S.corporate-sponsored media, including independent and international journalists, ordinary people from around the world who are directly affected by U.S. foreign policy, grassroots leaders and peace activists, artists, academics and independent analysts". I am a very big fan of Democracy Now and after watching the videos, I am unsure as to why these journalists were arrested. The only thing I can think of is that the government wants to suppress the voices of the protesters. You be the judge. For the full scoop and ways you can help, click here.
