WTF???? #10

. Aug 12, 2008

I saw this photo circulating around the web and I was definitely shocked and appalled by the Spanish basketball team's actions. This photo depicts the Spanish basketball team pulling back the skin on either side of their eyes, and came out shortly before they played the Chinese basketball team. Not only is this photograph wrong and in poor taste, it also goes against the basic principles of what the Olympics is supposed to be about. The Olympics was designed to be a place where different nations can come together, unified by a common thread (sports), and be open with one another allowing cultural exchange, with the intention of working towards an ultimate goal of world peace. There is a difference between talking "smack" and being racist and offensive (eg. Statements made by the French swimming team -"The Americans? We're going to smash them. That's what we came here for") . Although the Spanish team released a statement saying that they did not intend for this photo to be offensive or hurtful, I think this further exemplifies a lack of racial sensitivity which has been exhibited before, but last time by the soccer team and fans marring their international games in the 2005 season. After seeing this photo, I was definitely upset about their overtime victory against China (85-75). Discuss.
