I had these mixtapes on rotation for well over a week and I must say, they are crucial. Phene's lyrical acuity is on point and in my opinion, he is a breath of fresh air at a time where MCs #1 concern is selling records. Damn, That Boy Is A Phene...

If you haven't heard any music from the west coast native Phene, you are definitely living under a rock somewhere. Phene has been featured on over 100 mixtapes and earlier this year he was named the 2008 Central PA lyricist of the year in addition to receiving an award for mixtape of the year and best new artist of 2008 . But why the name Phene? Via his myspace, “Music brewed an addiction. An undeniable urge to play a part within the hip-hop community, & spread wisdom through real life messages". His complexity as an artist does not stop at his stage name either, as Phene's superior wordplay and creativity separate him from other upincomg hip-hop artists. By far my favorite track on his mixtape "The Spokesman" is the song Elementary featuring a sample from the great Andre 3000. Phene was has definitely taken the rap game by storm and in my opinion, he is the next big thing. Don't believe me? Then check out the videos below and his two most recent mixtapes.
